Founded in 1960, School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation (SMA), original Mechanical Department, is one of the most

age-old and reputed schools of Xihua University. At present, SMA has more than 100 teaching and administrative staff members,

including 15 professors, among whom there are 3 professors qualified to be the supervisor of doctorate candidates, 27 associate

professors, 21 lecturers. Among the staff members, there are 15 persons holding doctorate degree, 44 persons holding master

degree and 10 persons having oversea educational background. SMA is composed of 4 departments, i.e. Department of Mechanical

Design and Manufacturing Engineering, Department of Mechatronic Engineering and Automation, Department of Industrial Engineering

and Department of Industrial Design and Packing Engineering, 1 teaching office of mechanical fundamental courses, 2 experiment

centers for mechanical fundamentals and majoring fields respectively and 1 engineering training center. In the school,now there are

about 2200 undergraduate students, more than 180 master degree candidates and 40 candidates pursuing master¡¯s degree of

engineering.

    Over 40 years’ development, around the modern manufacturing, the school has established a comprehensive and harmonized

discipline system for the fostering, education and management of bachelor candidates, master degree candidates and

cultivating doctorate candidates  jointly with other national principal universities.There are 6 programs for bachelor candidates, i.e.

Mechanical Design & Manufacturing and Automation, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Design

and Packing Engineering (packing machinery), among which Mechanical Design & Manufacturing and Automation is the provincial

level and state level program with distinctive features. The school has an Undergraduate Fostering Base of Mechanical Engineering

and Automation of Sichuan Province, a Provincial Teaching Group of Mechanical Engineering and Automation, a Lab of Mechanical

Fundamentals Built by State and Province, which is funded by Ministry of Finance, a Comprehensive Experiment and Teaching Demo

Center of Mechanical Engineering of Sichuan Province. In the school, the Mechanical Engineering is the first-class subject authorized to

offer masters including 4 master's degree conferring posts: Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, Mechatronic Engineering,

Mechanical Design and Theory, Testing and Measuring Technology and Instrument. The school can provide the program for masters

of engineering in mechanical engineering and is authorized to offer engineering masters for the applicants with equivalent academic

evel in mechanical engineering. The school has a key provincial discipline: Mechatronic Engineering. Since 1996, SMA has offered

ldoctoral programs jointly with the relevant schools and departments in Chongqing University, Sichuan University and University of

Electronic Science and Technology of China. Now, the school is devoting considerable efforts to apply the authority for conferring

doctorates.

    In scientific research, the school has a Key Lab of Manufacturing and Automation of Sichuan Province, 3 research institutes

directly under university supervision i.e. Research Institute of Networked Manufacturing, Research Institute of Numerical   Control

Technology and Research Institute of Product Digitalization Technology, and 5 research institutes under school supervision, they

are Research Institute of Industrial Test and Control, Research Institute of Robotics, Research Institute of Non-conventional

Machining Technology, Research Institute of Cutting Tools Used on NC Machine Tools and Research Institute of System and Control.

Recently,the school has undertaken and finished a lot of research projects, such as State Project 863, The State Major Projects of The

8th Five-year Plan, The 9th Five-year Plan and The 10th Five-year Plan, The State Natural Science Fund Projects etc. The school has

more than 40 academic works including teaching materials and 600 research papers published.

    Since its foundation 40 years ago, the school has fostered a large number of senior talented people for the socialist    modern

construction of China. The students graduated from the school are now working in the industries of machinery, traffic, energy

sources, electronics and information, aviation and spaceflight, national defence, light industry, medicine, packing and environment

protection. For 5 years, the ratio of graduated students offered by the school vs the talent needed by the society has been 1 to 3,

and the employment rate is favourable. Before graduation, the employment rate is over 90%, while the employment rate for the

students holding master degree is 100%. In the school, there are a number of undergraduates and graduates enrolled in national

principal universities to pursue master degree and doctorate degree respectively each year.
